Shaken Science: A disputed diagnosis imprisons parents

March 07, 2016 by Emily Chow
“Doctors and engineers have challenged the science behind Shaken Baby Syndrome for more than a decade, but the disputed diagnosis is still being used to help build murder and abuse cases nationwide. The Washington Post, in an investigation with journalists at Northwestern University’s Medill Justice Project, for the first time identified 200 criminal cases in 47 states that ended when charges were dropped or dismissed, defendants were found not guilty or convictions were overturned. In “Shaken Science,” a series starting online now and in print Sunday, The Post will explore the lives of parents and caregivers who were accused of abuse and later set free and the doctors who once believed in Shaken Baby Syndrome but now say the diagnosis doesn’t hold up.”

I oversaw the design and development of this project. I also helped pitch in with some of the development towards the end.

Hazards above: Fallen from the skies

March 07, 2016 by Emily Chow
“Since 2001, the U.S. military has had a problem with drones crashing around the world. Last year, though, set a record for Air Force drone crashes. All told, 20 large Air Force drones were destroyed or badly damaged in accidents last year, the worst annual toll ever, according to a Washington Post investigation. Driving the increase was a rise in mishaps involving the Air Force’s most advanced “hunter-killer” drone, the Reaper.”

Refuge: 18 stories from the Syrian exodus

December 03, 2013 by Emily Chow
“A child broken. Homes destroyed. Millions of lives upended. Syria’s refugee crisis is altering the Middle East.”

Reporter Kevin Sullivan and Photographer Linda Davidson had an idea for a series of stories and held a brainstorm prior to their reporting trip to Syria. They returned with powerful photographs and an interest in exploring different ways to showcase the voices of Syrian refugees outside of our standard article template. Tim Wong mocked up this "story gallery" experience and I worked with our Wordpress developer Connor Jennings to build out the templates.
